If I am planning to leave my abuser, I will carefully read the General Safety Planning document and do what is necessary within my capability, as far in advance as possible, to prepare for leaving.

I will prepare by doing the following:

* Saving money.
* Hiding extra clothes for me (and my children) in a friend’s house.
* Making an extra set of house keys, car keys, and other keys.
* Get a PO Box.
* Open my own savings and checking account and have the statements sent there.
* Get a driver’s license.
* Collect important documents (See General Safety Planning) or make copies of important documents I will need.
* Make arrangements for my pets.

This was developed with material adapted from the Oakland County Coordinating Council Against Domestic Violence ( Council Against Domestic Violence) and material from the SafePlace Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Hotline Resource Manual (in Austin, TX – SafePlace)
