Types of Abuse
(taken from "Wilson, K.J. When Violence Begins at Home. 1997)
1. Physical Abuse- The use of strength, size, or presence of hurt or control another person. Examples include: pushing, shoving, pulling, slapping, grabbing, kicking, retraining, or punching. It also includes abuse while using an object, such as throwing objects, breaking objects, driving recklessly, kicking objects or sweeping items off tables or countertops. Physical abuse can also be when one partner tries to trap another, prevents him/her from leaving or if someone stalks his/her partner.

2. Emotional Abuse- When one partner uses words, voice or action to try to control, hurt or humiliate their partner. This is harder to recognize as abuse because there is no physical evidence, such as bruises or scars, however it is STILL abuse. Examples include: threatening bodily harm or harming someone else, accusing partner of unfaithfulness, name calling, using insults, criticizing, insulting or humiliating partner. Threatening divorce or threatening to take custody of children is also a form of abuse.
